Intro

Introduction to Water, Environment and IWRM

Define the terms and concepts related to water and the environment. Describe the meaning of IWRM and its main principles. Understand the main reasons for adapting an IWRM approach. Identify some areas where IWRM can assist adaptation to climate change. The goal of this chapter is to introduce the concept of integrated water resources management (IWRM) and its principles, and to provide a preliminary overview of the ways that implementing IWRM can address challenges due to climate change. IWRM is the sustainable development, allocation and monitoring of water resource use in the context of social, economic and environmental objectives (Cap-Net, 2005a). It is cross-sectorial and therefore in stark contrast to the traditional sectorial approach that has been adopted by many countries. It has been further broadened to incorporate participatory decision-making of all stakeholders.

Lesson one

Climate Change - Impacts and Drivers

Identify the drivers of climate change. Identify the physical science basis of climate change. Describe the impacts on the water cycle as the result of climate change. Describe the projected impacts on the water cycle as the result of climate change. Explain the consequences for water use and ecosystem functioning as the result of changes in the water cycle. The aim of this module is to familiarize participants with the drivers and physical science basis of climate change, as well as to help them understand potential impacts on the water cycle and the consequences for water use and ecosystem functioning. There is no doubt that this climate change is going to have impacts on water and many other sectors that are sensitive to climate variability and change. Therefore, it is imperative to develop a good understanding of some of the basic aspects of climate change and how it is detected before considering the impacts of such change.

Lesson two

Introduction to 3R

Identify the 3R concept; reduce, reuse and recycle. Explain the reason why 3R should be implemented and the benefits of implementing 3R. Describe how 3R can be implemented. State the issues and challenges of implementing 3R.

Lesson three

Understanding IWRM - Adaptation & Implementation

Define the terms and concept of adaptation to climate change and variability. State the various typologies of adaptation options. Identify the adaptation measures for various sectors and climate change impacts. Describe the various water resource management instruments that are available to address climate change manifestations. Identify and select the different policies and instruments for IWRM’s adaptation.
